Montana has banned the use of TikTok in the state, but creators are fighting back.

May 23 2023

Montana has banned the use of TikTok in the state, but creators are fighting back. Since TikTok first became popular in 2019, talks of eradicating it in the U.S. have circulated. On Wednesday, the first U.S. state-level ban of the app was signed into law by Montana’s governor Greg Gianforte, who said the ban will “protect Montanans’ personal and private data from being harvested by the Chinese Communist party.” In response, a group of five TikTok creators in the state have sued to block the ban, arguing that the new law violates their first amendment rights. It’s a watershed moment for the app, which has become wildly popular among Gen Z: YPulse’s The TikTok Effect trend report shows the platform has become a main source of entertainment this gen—they’re on the app daily, watching hours’ worth of content, and oftentimes creating their own.
