The maximalism aesthetic is coming for tech thanks to a trend that originated in Japan.

The maximalism aesthetic is coming for tech thanks to a trend that originated in Japan. Young people in Japan have influenced a trend known as “Decoden” style (short for “decorated” and “denwa,” the Japanese word for phone) and it’s coming to America. The trend has most prominently been circulating on TikTok where creators can be seen decorating their smartphones with glitter, jewels, and all sorts of glamorous, maximalist charms / accessories. The designs are reminiscent of bedazzled flip phones during the ‘00s, “in which every inch of the device is covered in embellishment.” The trend is taking off so much that an actual store in Queens, NY called Cutes House popped up recently where young people can use the shop’s DIY craft studio to revamp their boring phone cases. Videos on TikTok show creators adding butterflies, fuzzy strawberries, and pearls to their phones. The content is loved for its soothing nature, although many comments joke about being able to fit the phones in their pockets. (The Verge)
