Walmart is debuting a “Snap Scan & Shop” lens on Snapchat to help consumers make meals out of ingredients in their pantry. The retailer is introducing shoppable augmented reality (AR) content via Snapchat to grow its ecommerce sales, and its most recent activation includes “Snap Scan & Shop,” a lens that allows users to scan their food refrigerator and pantry items to discover recipes. Dotdash Meredith’s Allrecipes will fuel the recipe recommendations and the ability to buy additional ingredients via Walmart. According to Accenture, Gen Z and Millennials will make up 62% of global social commerce within three years, making Snapchat an ideal partner for debuting shoppable content via augmented reality. YPulse’s food shopping and trends research shows 72% of young consumers have shopped for groceries online, and Walmart’s “Snap Scan & Shop” tool is an example of how virtual search tools could become a bigger part of online grocery shopping for young consumers.
