(TL;DR: The group was once composed of several Gen Z A-list social media stars, like Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae, who basically lived and breathed content creation in the Hype House mansion in L.A. But following a litany of lawsuits and messy business practices, the group has lost some of its top creators, and what remains is some stressed out teens vying for a spot in the social media influencer cog). Now, Netflix’s Hype House documentary gives an even deeper look at the lives of its remaining members living and creating together in the L.A. mansion, and the dark reality of relying on themselves and other social media creators for a living. The members grapple with staying in the collective or going off to pursue their own deals, to the point where everyone wonders, “Why am I doing this?” And while the Hype House members’ struggles with content creation as a full-time job are somewhat unique (many of them start realizing that their social media fame has more to do with luck than talent), the show highlights the true grit it takes to churn out content for a living.
