From Facebook to Apple, companies are betting on augmented reality glasses (again). Augmented reality has taken off even more with young consumers in the last year, and now tech companies are accelerating their development of computerized AR glasses for consumers. Of course, AR glasses have been tried before—remember Google Glass and Snap Spectacles?—but the sheer number of tech cos working on them now could mean a real lasting trend is in the works. Facebook announced last month that they are developing AR glasses “in tandem with sensor-packed wristbands that can detect finger movements, part of a broader push in researching the development of software and hardware to support the eyewear.” Niantic, which has already had major AR success with Pokémon Go and augmented reality shopping tools, is working on AR glasses as well, with plans to publicly test them soon. Meanwhile, Apple is working on an AR headset with glasses to follow, while Snap plans to sell consumer AR glasses once again. (WSJ)
