Sports betting and prediction markets are the new popular risky investment. While headlines circulated frequently about young people investing in crypto a few years ago (YPulse even wrote a trend report on it), there’s a new high-risk investment trending. According to a report from Northwestern, almost a third of 18-29-year-olds are or are thinking about putting money in sports betting and prediction markets. One major reason among this group is because they feel they’re falling behind financially, and 80% believe taking a risk is a quicker way to achieving their goals. The prediction markets especially play on young people’s already booming interest in online sports betting, making it possible to earn big betting on just about anything. However, young women are “about half as likely” to be putting money into these kinds of risky investments—following the trend of sports betting, which YPulse data shows is far more popular among young adult men.
