Young men are turning to their favorite sports YouTubers for emotional support.

Feb 12 2026

Young men are turning to their favorite sports YouTubers for emotional support. While these creators are typically know for covering events like college sports, many young viewers are reaching out them via DMs because evidently it feels far less intimidating than contacting a mental health professional. Creators like Josh Pate (500K subscribers) and Tom Grossi (1M subscribers) say fans regularly DM them about breakups, financial stress, and even suicidal thoughts. Pate says the most common issue men bring to him is “broken homes, by ten miles,” almost always intersecting with financial stress. And even though none of these creators are professionals at it, they’ve become dedicated to showing up for their fans. Researchers say it’s rooted in attachment theory, as brains are hardwired to seek comfort from consistent, accessible figures—and daily-posting creators fill that role. (NY Mag)
