With the absence of major artists on TikTok, trending, non-song audio clips are getting bigger than ever. In February, Universal Music Group pulled songs from the platform due to lapses in both recording and publishing deals. Now, sound clips without any associated context and available without royalties, like random user-made audios and TV / interview clips, are getting even more air space (though they’ve driven tons of trends already). With UMG out of the picture for the foreseeable future, catchy sound bites will be further isolated from their original context and fused with other snippets to generate meme-worthy audios. (WIRED)
