Black Millennial parents are sharing which of their parents’ habits they’re not repeating—but with lighthearted additions to the trend of breaking “generational curses.”

Jul 19 2023

Black Millennial parents are sharing which of their parents’ habits they’re not repeating—but with lighthearted additions to the trend of breaking “generational curses.” This trend was started by an influencer on Facebook who shared that “I throw away stained Tupperware & we open up more than 1 box of cereal at a time.” Her video instantly blew up, and now other young Black social media users (especially on TikTok) are sharing their own funny anecdotes of how they’ve broken their parents’ habits. But although this trend has gained laughs online, the reason behind it is a bit more serious, being “largely rooted in them [Black Millennial parents] gaining upward mobility and now being able to afford the middle class luxuries their parents couldn’t provide.” YPulse research shows that with Millennial parents being the first generation of parents widely on social media, much of their parenting is shaped by what they share / see online.
