Chatbots can be emotional support companions, too. Inflection AI, a start-up company in the field of artificial intelligence, has released Pi, a chatbot that aims to provide emotional support to people. The Pi chatbot is designed to provide comforting support and validation to users and is ultimately part of a growing wave of chatbots which are being infused with personality and conversational flair by technology companies, like Snapchat’s My AI system. In this case, Pi’s chatbot is structured as a public benefit corporation, with the aim of building trustworthy AI that does not provide bad advice or enable harmful behavior and to refine the tech, Inflection AI hired therapists to train its algorithm over the last year. Whether or not Gen Z and Millennials will enjoy the tech is uncertain at this time, but YPulse data does show they’re open to receiving mental health help via online platforms. (NYT)
