Coachella’s top performances came from Latin artists during the first weekend of the festival. Gen Z and Millennial favorite BadBunny quite literally “transcended music” in a two-hour performance, making history as the first Latino solo artist headliner of the festival. The Puerto Rican star opened the show by saying, “Nunca antes hubo uno como yo,” which translates to “Never before has there been someone like me” in English. He also asked the crowd “How you doing tonight, Coachella? What do you prefer, me talking in English or hablando Español?” and “Español” was their overwhelming response—proving young people of color (and young people in general) truly do love and appreciate music from an array of cultures and languages. YPulse’s Music report data shows 64% of young POC say they enjoy music in languages they don’t speak compared to 54% of White / non-Hispanic young people. Other Hispanic stars stole the weekend with some of the most talked about performances online being from Rosalía, Kali Uchis, Becky G, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Conexión Divina, and DannyLux.
