Disney’s Lilo & Stich live action movie is already stirring up debate as the casting choices are being accused of colorism. Disney recently announced 22-year-old Sydney Agudong will play Nani in the live action film and although she was born and raised on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, fans are accusing Disney of “pandering to Eurocentric beauty standards.” Twitter users who belong to indigenous communities are pointing out how colorism in media is a huge issue and note that this is a “missed opportunity to showcase proper representation of dark-skinned Pacific Islanders.” YPulse’s Representation in Action (Revisited) trend report shows that 69% of young people who identify as Asian / other agree with the statement: “I wish I saw more people of my race in TV shows / movies.” (Insider, Yahoo)
