Gen Z is growing more aware of their screentime, and the popularity of non-smartphones is being discussed (again). This gen has a sense of nostalgia for Y2K that rivals that of the Millennials who remember it—and while the idea of Gen Z embracing old tech isn’t entirely new, companies are seeing a rise in sales for what Gen Z’s calling “dumb phones” or “feature” phones that just have simple features like GPS and a hotspot. HMD Global (the maker of Nokia) saw an influx in sales last year and advocates for the tech are predicting a “5% increase in the next five years if nothing else, based on the public health concerns that are out there.” Other companies like Punkt and Light are “selling devices geared toward those with a desire to spend less time on their phones and social media.” On social media, more influencers have been showing off their “new” phones as well (although they’re obviously not using them to upload their content.) However, YPulse’s Tech / Device Usage report data shows that the majority of Gen Z say they can’t live without their smartphone and only 5% of Gen Z own a feature phone. (CNBC)
