Home Depot launched a virtual kids experience in Roblox in its first foray into the metaverse. Taking place in Redcliff City—a “sovereign island city-state” within Roblox—the virtual experience is based on the home improvement chain’s in-person Kids Workshops, which give kids hands-on learning experiences both in-store and online. In the Roblox space, young players can go through a scavenger hunt in Home Depot’s virtual aisles to gather materials to build their own projects, including a birdhouse, a mini flower garden, or a small car. Home Depot is one of many, many brands that have launched experiences in the metaverse in order to reach young consumers where they are. And though there have been murmurs that the metaverse may already be passé as a buzzword, Gen Z—and even Gen Alpha—are spending time a ton of time there: YPulse’s 2022 Metaverse trend report found that 88% of Gen Z play a video game that brings them into a virtual world.
