Mark Zuckerberg is being warned to put the metaverse and his push for teens in Horizon Worlds to rest. U.S. Senators said Meta had earned itself a “documented track record of failure to protect children and teens” in a statement and warned Zuckerburg against using them to rescue his intended plans for the future of the metaverse. Reality Labs, the division housing metaverse projects, shared that in 2021 and 2022 they “recorded a cumulative loss of nearly $24 billion, including $13.7 billion just last year.” As the prices of their VR headsets drop in a last-ditch effort to reach young consumers, some argue Zuckerberg has officially “buried the metaverse” as his focus has shifted toward AI (the new marketing buzzword on the block).
