Gen Z and Millennials are leading a bookstore revival. Gen Z and Millennials may be digital-first generations, but that doesn’t mean they’ve completely ditched pastimes like reading paper books. Chain bookstores are on the rebound: more than 172 indie bookstores opened in the U.S. last year and book sales are up 13% YoY. Young people are seeking out books—and bookstores—out of love for the activity and to escape technology. Not to mention, reading books is viewed as a nostalgic pastime for these gens as it brings them back to their childhood, and books help them connect with the world in these chaotic times. And of course, #BookTok is certainly to thank for the bookstore revival as young people learn about new titles from book influencers. YPulse’s hobbies and passions research shows 34% of young consumers have read a book as a way of taking care of their mental health during the pandemic. (Business Insider)
