Wide-leg denim has officially overtaken skinny jeans—and the sales speak for it.

Mar 24 2022

Wide-leg denim has officially overtaken skinny jeans—and the sales speak for it. We told you about Gen Z and Millennials’ wide-leg versus skinny jean debate that circulated social media at the start of 2021. Since then, the looser-fitting jean has skyrocketed in popularity for its comfy ‘fit, and now represents one-third of the jeans category for women. The NPD Group reports U.S. sales of straight-leg women’s denim nearly doubled among Gen Z females last year compared to 2019, while the demand for skinny jeans dropped 34% among this gen. Despite their love for skinny jeans, Millennials are (slowly) leaning into this denim category: straight-leg jean sales among the gen increased 12% while skinny jeans fell 15% from 2021 to 2019. An apparel analyst at The NPD Group explains the attraction to baggy denim stems from the fact that pretty much everyone has been wearing sweatpants throughout the pandemic. Levi Strauss & Co.’s CEO also notes that people’s waist sizes have changed, too, and Abercrombie Fitch & Co’s CEO claimed last March that “the skinny jean is becoming less important.” YPulse’s fashion and style research shows 83% of young people say comfort is the number one priority in what they wear.
