Last night’s Super Bowl halftime show was made for nostalgic Millennials, and young people engaged with the game via memes and inside jokes. YPulse’s Pop Culture Redefined trend research shows that while live TV events like the Super Bowl aren’t necessarily the most-popular pop culture moments for Gen Z and Millennials, they do keep up with them through memes and social media commentary, and last night was no exception. Star-studded performances from Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, and Eminem made this year’s Super Bowl halftime a can’t miss for nostalgic Millennials, and fans praised it as one of the best halftime show performances yet thanks to its hip-hop-centric lineup and celebration of Black musicians. But that wasn’t the only thing young people were talking about during the Super Bowl: NBC’s technical mishap where they labeled Mickey Guyton’s national anthem performance using the nameplate for R&B star Jhené Aiko’s (who sang “America, the Beautiful”) was also the talk of social media; Gwyneth Paltrow eating a “Smells Like My Vagina” candle in Uber Eats’ ad spot was (obviously) meme-d about; and fans of HBO’s Euphoria couldn’t stop talking about the real Super Bowl throwdown—a.k.a. Cassie and Maddie’s pent up feud that went down in last night’s episode. (NBC News, Adweek)
