Quick service restaurants are filing for virtual restaurant trademarks to claim their space in the “metaverse.”

Feb 10 2022

Quick service restaurants are filing for virtual restaurant trademarks to claim their space in the “metaverse.” McDonald’s recently filed a series of trademarks for a virtual restaurant that can deliver food online and in-person, including a trademark for “virtual food and beverage products,” which basically means NFTs. A trademark for “operating a virtual restaurant online featuring home delivery” was also filed, along with entertainment services and events like “online actual and virtual concerts” under the McDonald’s and McCafe brands. All that to say, McDonald’s wants to bridge the digital and in-person restaurant experience so consumers can enjoy their virtual metaverse orders IRL, too. Panera Bread also filed for a “Paneraverse” trademark, including “NFTs, virtual entertainment services, and a virtual reward program.” Non-food brands are also doubling down on their metaverse plans: Nike established a Metaverse Studio and has filed patents for virtual asset like “cryptokicks,” while Gucci, Microsoft, and Crocs have started looking for employees to build out their metaverse offerings.
