Netflix is making a movie about the social media famous grandma who accidentally invited a stranger to Thanksgiving six years ago. Once upon a time (in 2015), Wanda Dench sent an innocent text message to her grandson about Thanksgiving plans. But she had actually texted a stranger, Jamal Hinton, who asked if he could come to dinner anyway. Wanda said yes, and the humorous exchange between the two quickly went viral on social media. But it also sparked a friendship and Thanksgiving tradition—Hinton has joined Dench’s Thanksgiving every year since, and the internet celebrates their unique bond annually. Now, Netflix is turning the story into a feature film, The Thanksgiving Text. Abdul Williams is set to write the screenplay, and producers Robert Teitel and George Tillman, Jr. for State Street Pictures (known for The Hate You GiveThe Barbershop Franchise, and Men of Honor) will also be involved. The Thanksgiving Text marks another step for Netflix in producing a live-action family film / TV show aimed at young consumers, and YPulse’s (new!) Pop Culture Redefined trend research shows Gen Z and Millennials enjoy when brands play into trending moments.
