TikTok’s music influence is taking over music festivals. This year’s Lollapalooza has never been more TikTok, with artists like Tai Verdes, Brooke Alexx, Jaden Hossler (jxdn), DJ Kooze, and headliner Megan Thee Stallion taking the festival’s stages—all artists whose popularity has been fueled by the app. Megan Thee Stallion first gained mass attention on TikTok with hit songs like “WAP” and “Savage,” and was the No. 1 most played artist on TikTok in 2020. Tai Verdes joined TikTok at the start of 2020, gradually building his followership and turning his 200,000 video views into 20 million with his debut of “A-O-K” this past May. Pop singer Brooke Alexx (winner of the “Empowered by Bumble” music competition) and DJ Kooze first started using TikTok as a channel for showcasing their musical passions, and are now performing at Lollapalooza—an even bigger tale of how the app is becoming a platform for beginner artists. Jaden Hossler is making a name for himself as a musician on TikTok after leaving the Sway House content house, and is now going on tour with mainstream performers like Machine Gun Kelly. YPulse’s data shows that 64% of Gen Z and 39% of Millennials say they have discovered new music on TikTok, and the artists behind young people’s favorite hits are building audiences beyond the app. (Chicago Tribune)
