Young people are becoming minimalists when it comes to their alcohol consumption.

May 05 2021

Young people are becoming minimalists when it comes to their alcohol consumption. YPulse’s Sobriety trend research found that 74% of 21-36-year-olds who drink have limited the amount of alcohol they consume or were interested in doing so, and while the pandemic led to temporary increases in consumption, signals show that moderation is back in style. According to NielsenIQ, sales of nonalcoholic beverages have been increasing at retail locations, and as of February, sales for nonalcoholic beer and wine increased more than 30%. Etsy even saw a 200% increase in searches for “sober or dry gifts” from December through February 2021 compared to the same time the previous year. Celebrities like Chrissy Teigen have started normalizing their experience with cutting back alcohol consumption or embracing sobriety, noting that the choice to take a step back from drinking comes from a desire to feel better physically and mentally. YPulse data found that the amount of people participating in the sober event Dry January stayed strong this year, and noted that moderation has returned to pre-pandemic levels.
