Gen Z students are coming up with safer, alternative events as traditional proms get cancelled again.

Apr 19 2021

Gen Z students are coming up with safer, alternative events as traditional proms get cancelled again. When COVID cancelled proms last spring, high schoolers held out hope that things would be normal by 2021. But with the virus still lingering and vaccines only just now rolling out to young people, many of this year’s proms are still being cancelled or “entirely rethought.” Some student councils in the country have opted to host formal casino nights with poker tables instead of a dance, where students can still wear their prom dresses and tuxes with masks while socially distancing. Others are still hosting prom, but moving the venue to a big backyard or warehouse. According to one sociologist: “It’s important to celebrate or mourn or mark these milestones collectively as safely as we can. We just have to balance public health with other priorities, including kids’ mental health and well-being.” (Teen Vogue)
