The swift downfall of David Dobrik is a lesson in the “dangers of influencer branding.”

Mar 25 2021

The swift downfall of David Dobrik is a lesson in the “dangers of influencer branding.” Not long after YouTuber David Dobrik launched his new photo-sharing social app Dispo, he stepped down as a co-founder and lost several brand sponsorships following rape allegations against his Vlog Squad. And in a “rare move,” venture capital firm Spark Capital severed “all ties” with Dispo, as did Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six who said they were distancing themselves and donating any profits from the investment toward organizations assisting victims of sexual assault. While the risks around partnerships and celebrity scandals are nothing new, this does highlight the need for brands to “conduct proper background checks of involved parties and not to let a hot “rule-breaking” property be an excuse to ignore basic rules.” (NBC News)
