Throwback jerseys are so in right now. When Adidas and the NHL were crafting their “Reverse Retro” collection, their designs were inspired by a Snoop Dog music video from 1994 where the rapper donned a Penguins hockey jersey (as well as other musicians from the ‘90s and Y2K era). After all, nostalgia sells among young shoppers. Accounts like @HockeyRapper on Twitter are full of posts “documenting the plethora of rappers who have worn hockey jerseys.” Other streetwear labels are capitalizing on hockey’s “rich aesthetic history and making their own fashion-leaning jerseys”: Supreme recently released a teal and purple mesh number inspired by a Mighty Duck’s jersey, while one of Nike’s hot-selling items was a collaborative jersey with Cactus Plant Flea Market that says “Air” on the front.
