Millennials are likely to flee cities over the next year. As college students are revamping their childhood bedrooms, Millennials are contemplating a scenery change. According to a survey from personal finance software company Quicken, 93% of Millennials living in cities have stayed there since the start of the pandemic, but more than a third of them (37%) are considering moving away in the next year. They won’t be leaving all at once, but “in waves” over the next twelve months suggesting a “gradual exodus.” Similarly, our No Place Like Home trend report found that 33% of Millennials in cities were considering or planning to move to a suburban or rural area, and the desire of having a large backyard and outdoor space was among one of the top reasons for doing so.
