TikTok is being questioned as senators suspect foul play from China with U.S. user data. A joint letter from two U.S. senators was sent to the CEO of TikTok this week ordering a response after eyebrows were raised over new reports released by the app containing “misleading information” on how American user data is stored and used by China. The U.S. government is worried the platform could take advantage of American data, such as Social Security numbers and tax IDs that the app uses to pay creators, and provide it to China’s government. Additionally, there have been issues in the past with TikTok and its parent company sharing users’ driver’s licenses. An official TikTok ban has yet to take place nationwide, but that hasn’t stopped it from being banned from government devices, various schools, and in other countries. But if the app ever does fully go away, Gen Z and Millennial users tell YPulse they’d flock to Instagram next. (New York Times)
