Oreo is promoting the return of Cakesters by taking over the last standing Blockbuster. Located in Bend, Oregon, the Blockbuster location transports consumers back to 2007 (a.k.a. when the Cakesters first hit shelves) with walls splashed in movie posters spoofing popular Blockbuster genres, “It’s 2007 All Over Again” messaging, and more. VHS cases carrying Cakesters samples are also available for visitors, gracing nostalgic fans with two lost experiences: perusing their local Blockbuster and enjoying the comforting, cream-filled snack. Oreo is tapping into both nostalgia and the surge in snacking that has come about during the pandemic. YPulse’s Comfort in the Kitchen trend research shows how young consumers have used snacking to cope during the pandemic, while cooking comfort foods (especially ones that have gone viral on social media) has become a popular pastime.
