Young couples are seeking out therapy to grow their relationships. YPulse’s mental health research shows how Gen Z and Millennials are taking the stigma out of caring for their psychological needs by opening up about their coping mechanisms and experiences with therapy / counseling. The pandemic exacerbated their mental health needs, and for some young couples, the global health crisis has made them more open to therapy and couples counseling as they seek ways to maintain healthy relationships. Lisa Hochberger, a New York-based therapist who works closely with couples, says the majority of her clients are under 35-years-old and explains, “Young people want to prevent themselves from living a life like their parents who may have not had access to their unconscious pain and trauma.” Young people’s interest in going to couples therapy has been developing for a few years now: According to a 2017 survey by MidAmerica Nazarene University, half of 23-38-year-olds say they’ve attended couples counseling, with 25-30-year-olds making up the majority of those attending therapy. In the past, young people / young couples’ coping mechanisms may have involved excess eating, drinking, and partying, but today’s youth are prioritizing mindfulness activities in pursuit of a healthier emotional life.
