When Gen Z uses LinkedIn, it’s often via memes and sarcasm. LinkedIn’s “humble brag” culture is real, and younger users have started parodying the way people communicate on the platform with fake job announcements and memes. After graduating from college, Shiv Sharma updated his profile in a post saying, “I have accepted an offer to work for The Krusty Krab Restaurant as part of their Entry Level Chef Program in Bikini Bottom.” The post garnered 5,000 reactions and several comments, and users have started putting their own spin on the “fake job announcement trend” via TikTok videos, the Twitter account @LinkedinFlex, and LinkedInLunatics on Reddit. Although YPulse data shows LinkedIn is the top social platform young people are using to hunt for jobs, one user explains, “Everyone I know creates an account due to school or peer pressure. We use it because there’s no other alternative for job hunting.” And while TikTok Resumes could change this, LinkedIn remains the industry norm for most, so until then young people are poking fun at the facade people tend to embody on the platform.
