Gen Z meme fashion brand, Pizzaslime, is leaning into TV entertainment to connect with young consumers. Best remembered for its mitten-wearing Bernie Sanders apparel, Pizzaslime has built a cult-like fandom among Gen Z for the way the brand is able to authentically connect with the generation through internet memes and fashion. With 1 million followers on TikTok, the brand (founded in 2013) has grown in popularity because of the pandemic and is taking its $2 million in clothing sales from 2020 as a sign to start engaging with its community through new entertainment channels. Following the launch of its record label with Diplo (which just had 75 million streams on Spotify for its first song), the brand is getting into TV entertainment to develop the “‘internetty’ version of American Idol,” which will incorporate music from its Diplo record label and create opportunities to engage with new clients. More brands are dabbling in original programming, and Pizzaslime’s co-founders “want to jump into spaces that don’t have strong internet voices or tones like [they] do.” (Business Insider)
