Chinese Millennials aren’t getting married—and it’s making their government nervous. A growing number of Chinese Millennials are postponing or eschewing marriage entirely. According to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, within six years the number of Chinese people getting married for the first time has fallen a significant 41%, from 23.8 million in 2013 to 13.9 million in 2019. The decline is partially because of the “decades of policies” designed to limit China’s population growth resulting in fewer young people in the country available to be married, as well as young women’s shifting attitudes toward marriage. The trend could create a population crisis, with birth rates falling in tandem. YPulse’s Extended Singledom trend research found that while Millennials in the U.S. aren’t rejecting marriage, they’re in no rush to tie the knot, creating a prolonged phase of single life. (CNN)
