Livestream concerts have been having a moment in quarantine, but will they sustain the industry in the future?

Jul 22 2020

Livestream concerts have been having a moment in quarantine, but will they sustain the industry in the future? Since the start of COVID, musicians have been hosting their own livestream concerts on platforms like YouTube, Facebook Live, Instagram Live, Topeka, and Stageit to promote new music and reach their young fans. As lockdowns have persisted, media outlets like Pitchfork, Billboard, and NPR, and brands like Urban Outfitters and Bud Light, started to get in on the act and team up with various artists for live virtual concerts. Artist Erykah Badu even started to build her own live platform. But the rapid expansion and experimentation of livestreaming can make it feel like “the Wild West,” and even with live content thriving, the question of whether it can “spawn” a reliable business model to help replace lost revenue for the industry still remains.
