Gen Z women are the least optimistic about the American dream. New data from PRRI shows that Gen Z (18-29-year-old) women are the only demographic in which less than half (48%) agree with the statement: “There’s no place I’d rather live than the U.S.” That’s well below the overall average (71%) and even Gen Z male average (61%) who said they wouldn’t live elsewhere. While Americans overall have become more pessimistic about the American dream, which was defined as the idea that “if you work hard, you’ll get ahead,” Gen Z show the greatest two-year decline, jumping from 50% to 36%. But within that number, 42% of men completely or mostly believe in the American dream, while just 30% of women do. Women of color are especially likely to feel left behind in the current economy, as they are often impacted more by inflation and economic downturns, and hold 60% of U.S. student debt.
