Instagram is testing a new feature called Flipside that could make private “finstas” an official feature. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri mentioned that while Flipside could create a more private space, it could also limit audience reach. The new feature would allow users to create a custom profile within their existing account with a custom name, bio, and photo, and “share exclusive content with a smaller group of followers.” (Much like they can through Close Friends sharing now.) While there is no guarantee of a public launch, Instagram will begin testing the feature, with a focus on control over the age of users being highlighted. YPulse’s Social Media Playbook trend report shows social media serves as the primary platform where younger individuals seek community beyond their immediate circle of family and friends.
