Youth clubs in the U.K. are getting rebranded. While many deem “youth centers” outdated, they’re being reimagined as “cultural centers” or simply “spaces,” and modernizing with debate nights, podcast booths, and recording studios, where young people can actually create something from their interests. While Gen Z craves places to hang out, feel supported, and move forward in their careers, independent youth spaces that rely on donations and grants are trying to stay afloat. Since 2010, U.K. funding for youth services has been down 73% and more than 1K youth centers have closed in England. And while it can be difficult for these under-staffed and under-funded spaces to keep their doors open, youth centers can keep young people feeling connected beyond social media and out of trouble.
