Shared expenses and unpaid debts are a problem among Gen Z and their friends. Younger adults tend to favor paying back one person who “fronts” a bill compared to other gens, with 42% of Gen Z saying this is how group expenses are usually handled. (That’s about double the rate of Millennials, who tend to prefer to split costs upfront.) But according to a new Zelle report, 55% of Gen Z say they have covered expenses for friends and were not fully repaid, leading to tension or negative impacts on their relationships. A notable 47% of Gen Z say they’ve gone into debt to cover group expenses expecting to be paid back and another 85% have at least sometimes borrowed money for shared costs. However, 71% admit to currently owing money to friends or family themselves. These are not always small repayments for a sweet treat or meal, either: nearly half (46%) of Gen Z who owe money say the total exceeds $1K. (Newsweek)
