Gen Z is doing more crossword puzzles than older gens.

Jun 03 2026

Gen Z is doing more crossword puzzles than older gens. One crossword editor for The New York Times says “we are living in the golden age of puzzles” and it seems that may be thanks to Gen Z. According to a new survey by Unscrambled Words, 50% of Gen Z say they do crossword puzzles daily, compared to 38% of Baby Boomers, 31% of Gen X, and 15% of Millennials. Across college campuses, student papers have launched their own puzzle sections including crosswords—and according to the NYT crossword editor, at least 75 teens have published their own crosswords in their paper. For some Gen Z, solving crosswords was a pandemic hobby that just stuck, and remains an analog respite from schoolwork or a 9-5 job. And because of Gen Z’s love for crosswords, many mainstay print and online puzzles have modernized their clues and words to keep up to date with current cultural events and social trends.
