Some bartenders and owners say Gen Z is changing pub culture.

May 06 2026

Some bartenders and owners say Gen Z is changing pub culture. For Gen Z, conversations with strangers at the bar might feel uncomfortable, and the possibility of ending up on someone’s Instagram story on a night out would be exceptionally cringey. Because of that, pub owners have noticed that young adults are demanding entertainment and pre-arranged experiences on nights out, whether it’s sporting events, live music, trivia, or craftmaking. It’s partly because it makes a night out more fun—especially for those who don’t drink much—but also to avoid awkward interactions just standing about. Pub culture has also changed because nights out have become too expensive—as young adults take on more expenses, an £11 or £12 cocktail just isn’t worth it anymore. (BBC)
