Schools in England will be banning smartphones under a new government plan.

Apr 22 2026

Schools in England will be banning smartphones under a new government plan. The government in the U.K. is turning existing guidance around smartphones at school into a formal requirement. According to the Department for Education, the plan will provide “legal force to what schools are already doing in practice.” One Conservative education secretary said the ban is “fantastic news for headteachers, parents and pupils across the country,” as many officials argue phones disrupt the learning process and fuel behavior issues. Still, some say that the ban won’t change much, considering many schools already have their own smartphone bans. Instead, they suggest that the government introduce funding for storage of mobile phones, like lockers or locked pouches, to make enforcement possible. (BBC)
