Gen Z’s new niche tech DIY obsession is creating their own computers from mismatched parts. Instead of buying readily available, mass-produced tech devices, some Gen Z techies are opting to create their own “cyberdecks” from scratch. Some creators have built their own retro gaming consoles, while others use cyberdecks for coding practice. The purpose is to build something completely personalized to their user, which is part of what makes the hobby particularly appealing to Gen Z, and why it’s gaining traction on social media. One popular creator posted a video of a handmade mermaid-themed cyberdeck built into a purse with intricate gold detailing, which got more than 1M views. Gen Z has long embraced DIY projects from fashion to home renovations, and that trend appearing in the devices they use might signal a growing interest in opting out of new tech prices and planned obsolescence.
