Speaking of tech in school, one neuroscientist says it’s the reason for Gen Z’s cognitive slipping. Jared Cooney Horvath says Gen Z is the first “in modern history” to score lower on standardized testing than the gen before them, and it has happened as tech has become a regular part of classrooms. Across the U.S., schools have instituted laptops and tablets, and a 2021 poll showed more than half of teachers using them one to four hours a day, with another quarter engaging with them for five. But for Gen Z growing up with a laptop on their desk, it’s often a distraction—no matter how many sites are blocked by their school wifi. One study from 2014 found university students on their laptops were off task for two thirds of a long class session. While cellphone bans in schools are also spreading, Horvath feels the government needs to focus on funding research to see which kinds of tech improve learning, rather than banning it entirely.
