AI literacy is being pushed in schools. Between interest from AI companies themselves—Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI—educators, and even lawmakers, education on AI is picking up quickly. And we know many young people feel like this is necessary, even for their young kids: 68% of all 13-39 agree AI should be taught to students in school. But the way that students are engaging with AI literacy varies widely. Some are being taught to use it for prompts and coding with an outlook on a job market heavily influenced by the tech. Others are being guided to a more critical lens, evaluating its accuracy, biases, and even social implications. Tech literacy is not a new concept in schools, whether for computers generally or social media, but some say it doesn’t actually address the risks of new tech. One study found Google’s digital citizenship curriculum about misinformation and online privacy did increase awareness around risks, but didn’t prevent them from happening. (NYT)
