Is the impact of teen social media use bad enough for full bans?

Feb 10 2026

Is the impact of teen social media use bad enough for full bans? Social media bans for minors under 16-years-old have been passing in legislation across Australia and Europe. But while they’re supported for reducing the negative impact on teens’ mental health, many studies show it might not be the answer. Studies from both the University of Manchester and the American Psychological Association show the use itself is not the problem in social media’s impact on young people. It’s how they use it and is in relationship their individual development, having different impacts not just by age, but by a variety of social and personal factors. Just like conversations about video games being dangerous for previous gens, research isn’t proving a one-to-one correlation that necessitates full-on bans rather than more careful parental controls. (The Hill)
