Some young people see using ChatGPT as a relationship red flag.

Jan 21 2026

Some young people see using ChatGPT as a relationship red flag.Whether friends, family, or romantic prospects, some young people are choosing to distance themselves from people over AI use. When it comes to dating, some TikTok creators say finding out someone uses ChatGPT is an immediate no to further dates. Others describe tense holiday arguments and friend group blowups over stances on AI. For these young people, using ChatGPT is a direct signal of people’s morals—they feel the environmental impact of AI, potential for misinformation, and shortcut to problem solving means those who use it have different priorities. But not everyone agrees: the young people who do use chatbots daily call the backlash “dramatic.” AI is embedded in daily life for millions of people—ChatGPT alone hit 700M weekly users in September—but it’s joining politics and lifestyle as a standard to judge compatibility.
