“Purple Rain” is soundtracking TikTok’s latest situationship confessions.

Jan 21 2026

“Purple Rain” is soundtracking TikTok’s latest situationship confessions. The song has gotten new love from Gen Z after appearing in the Stranger Things series finale, just as so many songs have before. And now, TikTokers are using the lyric “I never wanted to be your weekend lover” to reflect on casual relationships, situationships, and friends-with-benefits arrangements. Top posts are racking up millions of views. Some show “then vs. now” transformations of hookups that eventually became serious relationships. But others are more confessional, with users sharing old photos and texts from situationships they’re still processing and even alluding to being the “other person” in someone else’s relationship. (Her Campus)
