Gen Z is taking investment advice from TikTok and getting into the market younger than ever.

Jan 20 2026

Gen Z is taking investment advice from TikTok and getting into the market younger than ever. Social media is the top reason Gen Z investors say they got into investing, according to an Oliver Wyman Forum survey. (Though YPulse data shows fewer than 20% of 18-24-year-olds hold either stock or crypto investments.) Due to a stagnant job market and little faith in Social Security, young investors feel like they need to bet on themselves rather instead of institutions. And thanks to finfluencers like Vivian Tu (known as Your Rich BFF) who are racking up millions of followers, they’re making finance feel more like entertainment. More than half of Gen Z investors even say they started learning about investing before even entering the workforce, compared to just 20% of Boomers. They’re also leaning into risk encouraged online: in 71% of Gen Z portfolios, crypto makes up more than a third of their investments. (Fortune)
