Young Black men are swapping go-to tracksuits and Nike Techs for quarter zips. On TikTok, many are calling themselves “YGs” a.k.a. young gentlemen, moving away from the casual, street-oriented “YN” mindset. To them, quarter zips have a classier, more refined look than their typical athleisure fits. Some are taking the trend even further by pairing their quarter zips with matcha in hand. (But they’re not doing it to be performative!) As one creator put it, “We don’t do Nike Tech, we don’t do coffee. It’s straight quarter zips and matchas around here. We upgraded in life; we wear glasses now.” YPulse’s Fashion Preferences and Style report shows Nike—and athleisure in general—still ranks as one of the biggest fashion trends of the year among young males.
