Young workers are finding it hard to leave politics at the door when they clock in. A new Brightmine survey found that 29% of Gen Z and 28% of Millennials say politics have distracted them from their jobs over the past year—nearly four times more than Boomers who said the same. Politics isn’t abstract for younger workers; it’s directly impacting their rent, student loans, and job security. Overall, 27% of employees reported political distractions at work (up from 19% in 2024), and 64% have witnessed political disagreements. However, only about half of employers have formal policies governing politics in the workplace. Many younger workers feel they can’t separate their personal and professional lives the way previous generations did, so companies that pretend politics don’t affect them risk culture breakdown and declining productivity.
