Unfiltered screaming is a new fixture in music for Gen Z girls. Instead of bottling up frustration, exasperation, or joy, Gen Z girls’ favorite artists are encouraging them to let it all out—loud, unfiltered, and communal. Now, screaming along—whether it’s in a live show or left on a track—feels like a form of empowerment, a way for young girls to assert their voices and emotions. Olivia Rodrigo built it into her Guts World Tour, pausing mid-song to tell fans to think of something that makes them angry then scream it out together. Addison Rae went viral for surprising Charli XCX in the studio with a spontaneous scream so good they left it in the “Von Dutch” remix. And in the Broadway show John Proctor is the Villain, a pivotal scene has the cast of high school girls adding to each other’s screams like dominos. To this gen, screaming isn’t chaos—it’s catharsis, and it’s becoming the defining soundtrack of girlhood. (NYT)
